Fostoria High School is excited to introduce Girls Wrestling this year, joining the growing trend of the sport, which has been sanctioned in Ohio for three years. This means that they have their own separate competitions, including post-season tournaments. Girls wrestling is the fastest-growing high school sport in the nation, with increasing visibility at both the college and Olympic levels. This exposure at the higher level has shown what can be accomplished in a previously male-dominated sport.
Taking the lead is Kimberlie Moore, who is in her first year coaching girls wrestling. Moore has previously served as the head swim coach for six years at FHS and also coached volleyball for two seasons at Emerson Jr. High. She’s passionate about sports and supporting young athletes, with a goal of helping them grow both on and off the mat. She would like to give back to the young people in the community that she grew up in.
This season, Moore aims to help her athletes improve their skills and compete at a higher level. She specifically would like to see one of her wrestlers, Ariana Snowden, get back to the state tournament for the third year in a row, and place higher than she did her freshman year. For the other four girls, she would like to see improvements in their records and possibly advance in post-season competitions.
Looking ahead, Moore wants to grow the program at all levels and encourages people to attend matches and experience the sport. She believes that once more people see what wrestling is all about, they’ll be hooked!
