It's time to start thinking about the upcoming school year. Planning ahead is important for your children's success in school. Consider transportation, meals, and learning supports along with classroom supplies. The Back-to-School Planning Tool - https://ohiofamiliesengage.osu.edu/resources/back-to-school-planning-tool-for-families/ - includes questions to assist you in preparing your children for the new school year. Whether your child is returning to school or starting for the first time, it can be an exciting yet nerve-wracking period. Here are some tips to help alleviate back-to-school concerns: - Consistency and routines play a key role - Make sure to attend school daily to make friends and establish a rapport with the teacher - Ensure that kids are well-rested and well-fed - Establish healthy nighttime routines - Address specific worries with your child - Practice role-playing and taking control of worrisome situations - Be aware of your own behavior and words - Take the time to discuss feelings and worries as a family For kindergartners, establish a goodbye routine to ease fears. For adolescents, these strategies can help kick off the school year on a positive note: - Keep homework enjoyable and positive - Listen to your child and assist them in finding solutions - Foster independence and a growth mindset - Connect schoolwork to real-world events and future aspirations - Set clear and consistent rules - Offer emotional support and reassurance - Celebrate your child's progress and changes Start implementing these strategies now to ensure a smoother transition for everyone.
